- U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan urged the nation's military government
and pro- democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi to quickly launch talks laying
the groundwork for democracy in fear of losing steam for political reform
drive in Myanmar.
- Daw Aung San Suu Kyi told British Foreign and Commonwealth Office Minister
of her concerns about the continued decline in the economy and the problems
this was causing for the Burmese people and the only way forward was to move
towards a democratic and accountable government as quickly as possible. It
was made during telephone conversation.

prisoners was sentenced to 14 years in jail under emergency laws.

- The opening session of the second ministerial conference of the Community
of Democracies (CD) in Seoul feature video-recorded message from U.N.

brother to testify in a lawsuit he filed two years ago seeking a share of
the family house where she lives.

Burmese general and opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi after saying he might
resign if the ruling military junta failed to soon take steps towards
democracy.

- U Maung Ko, aged over 50, died of a heart attack while in detention at
Tharawaddy Prison.According to the Assistance of Political Prisoners (Burma)
(AAPP), U Maung Ko is the 82nd political prisoner to die while in the
custody of the current military regime.
