Daw Suu’s Family Inheritance Case
DVB - January 21, 2003

It is reported that the inheritance case of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is being heard in Rangoon today at the central court. Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s lawyer, U Kyi Win told the DVB that a witness from the litigant, U Aung San Oo testified:

A: It was to cross-examine one of the witnesses from U Aung San Oo. The witness is from the Land and Property Department. He came to testify as the normal procedure demanded. He gave his evidences with the maps and history of the land given by the department. Nothing new.

Q: He is the witness for U Aung San Oo?

A: Yes.

Q: What is the latest situation of the case?

A: We are cross-examining the witnesses from the litigant. According to their list, there are two witnesses from the litigant side still remaining to be cross-examined.

U Aung San Oo [the older brother of Aung San Suu Kyi] who is a citizen of the USA has been suing his sister Daw Aung San Suu Kyi since 2000 for the right to inherit half of the family’s property including the home she is living in Rangoon. The existing Burmese laws bar Burmese people who are taking foreign citizenship from inheriting in Burma but the court still hasn’t decided the case to this day. U Kyi Win said that the trial is expected to end soon.
