| Youth in Burma given
militia training
July 30 (NMG) Burma's military government,
mounted by international pressure after crushing down Aung San Suu
Kyi and her supporters at the end of May, organized basic military
trainings, small weapon training and trainings to defense external
forces around the country targeting youth age range between 18 to
40 and the trainings would be conducted till August 18, the reports
said.
While Commander Lt. Col Min Thein of LIB 228 gave an opening speech
to militia training near Indo-Burma town, Tamu, he said the training
aimed to safeguard country and to counter aggressive forces such
as American and other countries by taking lessons from Iraq when
it is necessary.
Police forces around the country were giving such trainings to
young people especially age between 14 and 40 who were forced to
attend these trainings. The trainees include anti-insurgency organizations,
paramilitary forces, ordinary peoples from villages, relatives of
armed personals in each township, family members of soldiers, members
of fire-services and red-cross.
The reports from Shwe-Bo district in Sagaing division stated that
a basic military trainings were conducting up to 720 trainees at
seven townships under Shwe-Bo district and family members of police
forces, fire-services and red-cross members were forced to attend
there. In the similar scenarios, 180 trainees were attending at
Sagaing Township sport stadium. The authorities ordered each family
to donate 300 Kyats in Tamu to cover the expense of military training
which was attended nearly 100 trainees, said one person from Tamu
who recently crossed to India from Burma.
Similar militia trainings were conducting at Pulaw, Myate and Tavoy
in Taninsarin division. The trainings were conducting at No.2 High
School Pyi-Char village in Pulaw, No. 2 Basic Training School Shwe-Du
village in Myate and Police Training School based in Tavoy. Every
village groups were asked to attend a total of 90 members including
30 people for permanent squad and 60 for volunteer squad.
Although the authorities claimed the trainings were aimed to safeguard
country, the training taught only basic military training and how
to use catapults and bamboo sticks, said a person from Indo-Burma
border area.
