arrested with opium

Guwahati, September 24, 2003:
The authorities in Manipur State of India arrested a local
youth along with four kilogram of opium near Indo-Burma border
yesterday, according to State police force.
The Manipur police in association with the Customs Department
arrested a Manipuri youth, identified as Ph Shyam Singh, last
night near Moirang in Indo-Burma border.
The police department told Mizzima correspondent that the
consignment was
brought from the bordering village of Burma. Based on a tip-off,
the police arrested Shyam Singh while he was carrying the
drug in a plastic bag.
There are estimated more than 20,000 opium addicts in the
north east India, which borders with Burma. |
