August 13, 2002:Worried over large-scale
exodus of Burmese nationals and increasing incidents of crime,
the Mizoram government of the northeast India has decided
deploy more forces along the Indo-Burma borders.
The Mizoram government officials told this correspondent
today that Indian Reserve force battalion would be deployed
along the border to contain the activities of anti-social
elements. In this context, they said that the porous Indo-Burma
border of Mizoram would be guarded properly so that the Burmese
nationals can sneak into the state.
Asked about the deportation of Burmese nationals, they informed
that altogether 4,110 Burmese nationals including 2074 women
have already left the state.
The government had set a deadline before August 13 for the
Burmese nationals to quit the state in view of a rape incident
allegedly committed by a Burmese national recently. After
the incident the Mizo had demanded the state government to
take stern action against the Burmese nationals staying in
the state.
