June 10, 2003:Three Burmese demonstrators protesting in front
of the
Burmese embassy in Kuala Lumpur may face punishment by flogging
and six
months in jail.
Thaung Shwe Michel, Saw Aiewa and Mrs. Simandihu were arrested
on June
19th while demonstrating for the release of Aung San Suu Kyi,
the
imprisoned Burmese Nobel Laureate opposition leader.
Under Malaysian law they face a possible sentence of flogging
and six
months jail, having been charged with staying in the country
without an
appropriate visa, according to the Democracy Alliance League
(Malaysia
branch).
An ex-member of the Suu Kyi lead National League for Democracy
party,
Thaung Shwe said that they would be punished and then expatriated
to
Burma through the Malay-Thai border.
A group of 40 Burmese demonstrators attempted to march past
the embassy
bearing pictures of Suu Kyi and posters calling for her release.
They
were stopped by police some 20 meters away from the embassy
walls. Six
people, including one women, were arrested, of which three
were later
released without charge.
Overseas based Burmese from around the world have been outraged
and
angered following the brutal attack on NLD members by military
backed
militia, and the subsequent arrest of the NLD leader Aung
San Suu Kyi.
