PRESS INVITATION
June 16, 2003
Dear Sir/Madam,
The Burmese military junta arranged an armed crowd of criminals
released from prison to attack Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and NLD
members on the 30th of May. The planned crackdown and premeditated
murder of democracy activists in Northern Burma has plunged
Burma yet deeper into crisis. The hope for peaceful transition
and a process of dialogue has been severely damaged by these
lawlessness and irresponsible acts of the regime. Daw Aung
San Suu Kyi is once again being detained at a secret location
in Rangoon by the regime, which has shut down the offices
of the NLD nationwide. But, the statement made by Burmese
foreign minister Mr. Win Aung in Phnom Penh that “she
is being kept in custody to protect her from possible assassination
attempt” is ironic.
The coming June 19th is the 58th birthday of Daw Aung San
Suu Kyi who is a Nobel Peace Laureate and Recipient of Jawaharlal
Nehru Award for International Understanding. Burmese democracy
activists around the world are calling for a global campaign
for her release. We, Burmese democratic forces in India are
organizing various activities to seek support from the people
of India and the Government of India for the return of Democracy
in Burma.
