SPDC ‘offers’
peace talk to KNU while fighting rages on
DVB ( 26 November 2003 )
The military junta of Burma, the SPDC is ‘persuading’
anti-Rangoon rebels, KNU (Karen National Union) to enter a
ceasefire talk as soon as possible with the junta.
A team of SPDC delegates led by Colonel Sann Pwint visited
the Thai border town of Maesod on 22 & 23 November for
the mission.
The team mainly explained the projects for ‘development’
in Burma set up by the SPDC and told the KNU not to lay down
preconditions when it comes to political dialogues and urged
the rebels to sign a ceasefire agreement.
Moreover, the team also went to pay their respect to the
former leader of the KNU, General Bo Mya who is receiving
medical treatments.
The joint secretary of the KNU Phado David Takabaw said the
regime tended to insist the complete surrender and ‘entering
legal fold’ of the rebels in the past.
It even didn’t allow the KNU to discuss a ceasefire
agreement. ‘We haven’t decided anything yet. We
have to wait and see the condition,’ he added.
