NLD members urged UN to take action
on Burma in a letter
DVB ( 11 November 2003 )
Rangoon Division NLD leaders and members including working
committee members, women and youth sent a letter to the UN
Security Council through Mr. Paulo Sergio Pinheiro, the organisation’s
special human rights envoy to Burma.
The letter urges UN to urgently take precautious measures
on the political situation in Burma. It requests the UN Human
Rights Commission to investigate into Dipeyin assault by forming
an inquiry commission, to help set up a just legal system
in Burma, push for the immediate release of political prisoners
and substantiate the 1990 General Election.
The failure to intercede by the UN could lead to serious
instability and political implosion inside Burma with the
effects to the whole region within a couple of months because
of the suppressed frustration felt by the people of Burma
and the dire political and economical situation, according
to a NLD youth.
The letter was given to Mr. Pinheiro personally by the NLD
party members while he was in Rangoon recently.
