Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is still under house arrest says Pinheiro

DVB ( 11 November 2003 )

The UN special human rights envoy to Burma, Mr. Paulo Sergio Pinheiro said that in contrary to the claim of the SPDC that Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is no loner being detained, she is still living under house arrest condition when he met her.

At a news conference in Bangkok held on 10 November, the envoy told reporters that Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is still in her house, and her telephone line is still cut off and security arrangements are still provided by the SPDC around her house.

According to his investigations, at least 135 people are still detained in connection with Dipeyin incident in contrast to 35 people claimed by the SPDC.

Among them, 8 NLD Central Committee members are being detained with Act 10b but it is not known what U Tin Oo who is currently imprisoned in Kale prison charged with.

At the moment, there are more than 1300 political prisoners in Burma and their releases are basic needs to solve the problems of the country, he said in a frustrated tone.

Mr. Pinheiro also warned that the SPDC is not likely to recognise the result of 1990 General Election which was won by the NLD in a landslide victory.

He is going to report his findings on human rights abuses in Burma including Dipeyin assault and the alleged systematic mass rapes of Shan women by Burmese soldiers at the ongoing UN General Assembly on 12 November.
