SPDC blames NLD for ‘religious
riots’ in Burma
DVB ( 7 November 2003 )
The Burmese military regime, the SPDC (State Peace and Development
Council) accuses the NLD for current swathes of anti-Muslim
riots in Burma. But the NLD party leaders deny that its members
are not involved in the riots.
Dr. Thein Lwin, the chairman of Meikhtila Township and an
elected MP said that the NLD is not a religious orientated
organisation and its members include Muslims as well as Buddhists.
It is also meaningless for the SPDC to blame the NLD whenever
there are problems in the country, insisted Dr. Thein Lwin.
An eyewitness told DVB that some ‘Buddhist monks’
who took part in the anti-Muslim riots at Meikhtila on 2 November
wore trousers beneath their robes implying that they are fake
monks.
Many Burmese citizens believe that the military authorities
deliberately created ‘religious riots’ to divert
people’s attention from the dire political and economical
situations of the country.
