NLD members attempt
to see Daw Aung San Suu Kyi
October 24, 2003
More than 90 NLD members had again attempted to see Daw Aung
San Suu Kyi at her home on 18 October, said a NLD youth member.
They went there at about 9am and had arguments with the local
authorities of Bahan Township. The members tried to see Daw
Aung San Suu Kyi before APEC meeting in Bangkok started but
they were told by the military intelligence (MI) agents to
get permission from her family doctor Tin Myo Win, said an
unidentified youth as follows:
An unidentified NLD youth : We went to ask them to give us
the permission to see our leader on the 18th. The authorities
of Bahan Township deterred us from seeing her out of fear.
They told us that we could not do so. The reason we asked
them the permission to see her is because they told us and
the outside media that she is ‘not’ under house
arrest. General Khin Nyunt himself said that she is not under
house arrest. Therefore, I went there to find out whether
my leader is under house arrest or not. When we got there,
they told us that they are ‘not’ keeping her under
house arrest but they are just taking security measures ‘for
her own safety’. When we told them that we want to see
her, they told us that they could not allow us to do so. They
told us to inform Dr. Tin Myo Win and get permission from
him. They said that they would let the people who are given
permission to see her by Dr. Tin Myo Win. There is no arrest
this time...During recent Thadingyut Festival, we attempted
to pay our respect to her. There were arguments with security
staff at the heavily barbed wired security check-point in
front of her house. They told us not to come to her house
‘to cause problems’ and forced us to disperse
and to go home… |
