Clash between Muslims and monks in
Moe Nyo, Pegu
DVB ( September 10, 2003 )
There has been a clash between Buddhist monks and Muslims
at Moe Nyo, in the western Pegu Division. On the evening of
September 6, about 80 monks marched along the streets of the
town, but nobody knew the reason why they did so.
The local authorities tried to split them up but they marched
on and burnt down the furniture shop of a local Muslim, U
Mahmud.
A local resident from Pyi (Prome) confirmed the report as
follows:
A local resident from Pyi : I haven’t heard the details
yet. It occurred about four days ago. I heard that the local
authorities in Pyi have gone to the area to sort out the problem.
I haven’t heard from them yet…I am sure that the
incident had happened. We got the news only yesterday…it
has occurred since the 5th.
During last month, a similar incident occurred at Paukkhaung
in Pegu Division. After the incident, novice monks were ordered
to stop from studying.
