Burmese activists sent open letter
to Kofi Anan
DVB ( September 4, 2003 )
In a letter to the UN General Secretary, Kofi Anan, seven
Burmese opposition groups abroad argue that if Daw Aung San
Suu Kyi’s demands highlighted by her hunger strike are
not met by the Burmese military junta, State Peace and Development
Council (SPDC), there could be dire consequences in Burma
and whatever happens to her, all the blames must be squarely
on the SPDC.
The SPDC fails to implement the resolutions of the UN for
the peaceful transition in Burma and the regime’s actions
are all going against the efforts of the UN to help the people
of the world achieve peace, development and stability, adds
the letter.
Ko Min Naing of DPNS, one of the signatories explained to
DVB about the letter as follows:
Ko Min Naing : In this situation, the international community
including the UN should apply more effective pressures on
the regime. We urged the UN General Secretary, Kofi Anan to
do more in the letter on this matter for the immediate release
of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. And the UN Security Council should
discuss the situation in Burma and apply more pressures on
the regime. The violent acts of the regime and the arrests
of our national leaders are not only affecting Burma, but
the whole region could be affected by the explosion inside
the country when it happens. We sent the letter so that the
UN can take action before things get out of hand.
Copies of the letter were also sent to the UN Security Council,
the EU President, the ASEAN President and the office of UN
Special Delegate to Burma.
