U Ne Win’s children appeal rejected
DVB ( Aug 15, 2003 )
It is reported that the SPDC’s Supreme Court in Rangoon
has today rejected the appeal of four relatives of former
Burmese dictator, General Ne Win and upheld the death sentences
handed to them for plotting to overthrow the current junta.
As the result of the rejection, the son-in-law of General
Ne Win, Aye Zaw Win and his sons Aye Ne Win, Kyaw Ne Win and
Zwe Ne Win have no legal rights for further appeal, said legal
experts, but they still have the right to apply for the pardon
from the SPDC’s chairman General Than Shwe and he could
still pardon them if it pleases him.
U Aye Zaw Win and his sons were arrested on the 7th of March
2002 and they were all given death penalty on the 26th of
September in the same year. The defendants appealed to the
Supreme Court and they were rejected thus. The ex-dictator
was unable to see the end of the case and died on the 5th
of December last year. His daughter, Daw Sandar Win who was
kept with him is still kept under house arrest, according
to reports from Rangoon.
According to reports received by DVB, apart from death sentences,
the four could further face imprisonment for not able to pay
their debts. U Aye Zaw Win and an his wife Daw Sandar Win
borrowed heavily from Asia Wealth Bank while they were in
power to do business but they were arrested before their business
projects took off.
They are still unable to repay more than 60,000,000 kyats
borrowed from the bank. The bank manger is suing Daw Sandar
Win and the trial will begin on the coming Friday at a divisional
court in Rangoon.
