NLD families express their worries for their loved ones

DVB ( August 12, 2003)

Family members of three NLD leaders of Mandalay Division who were arrested in July and detained by the authority expressed their worries.

A daughter of Kan Tun told DVB that “we have no contact with him since he was taken away on 19 July. We can’t find out and we don’t know where he is being detained.”

According to her, the authority came, searched Kan Tun’s room and confiscated some paper related to the NLD office

Although the authority told her that Kan Tun would be released two or three days later. There is still no sign of his release.

“We are very worried and anxious about his health because my father is quite old,” said she.

After more than 10 days of the arrest, she contacted International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Mandalay.

“They told me that they would make an enquiry but they haven’t replied to us yet,” said she. “I don’t know whether they have enquired about it or not but they did note down what I said.”

In the similar situation, no one knew where Saw Htay and Ko Gyi are.

The same family member told DVB, “We have heard that Saw Htay is still not allowed to see his family members and Ko Gyi was taken away on either 24 or 25 July.”

She also told DVB who is alleged to arrest her father, “U Ko Linn and U Tin Win Sein from the local authority office, one person from the Intelligence and another from the CID.”
