A letter to General Than Shwe by 4 NLD MPs

Four MPs from Mandalay Division had written to General Than Shwe and urged him to set up a commission to investigate the Dipeyin incident and to immediately release Aung San Suu Kyi from detention.

They also asked General Than Shwe to “repay political parties the rights to rally freely, to start the political dialogue and the like” in the letter.

So far, the authority has not given any reply and it had upset many Burmese activists.

“They don’t even care about the reaction of the international community and they also neglect what we are saying within Burma,” said Dr. Thein Lwin, one of the writers. “They are only worried that the people of Burma might rise up. They can’t let demonstrations like the 8888 uprising happen again.”

Despite the lack of response, Dr. Thein Lwin said “the MPs will continue to do what they need to do by using any possible means.

During the past two months, more than 70 MPs have sent letters to General Than Shwe, making similar requests and the NLD Women and Youth also took similar action.

“But we were not among those 70s members,” said Dr. Thein Lwin.

The letter was sent on 27 July.
