Weapons seized in Kalewa, Sagaing Division
DVB ( August 11,2003)
The security force at a checkpoint near Kalewa, Sagaing Division
is said to have seized grenades and bullets on 5 August when
the security force of SPDC stopped and searched a car heading
for Tamu, near the Indian border.
Our correspondent, Khin Maung Soe Minn said “the person
who transported the weapons and ammunitions was said to have
escaped and fled.”
According to merchants from both sides of the Indian-Burmese
border, a merchant from Shop No.10 in Tamu market was arrested
by the military intelligence agents from MI Base 17.
But there has not been any confirmation by any independent
source yet.
After that, police and soldiers patrolled inside and outside
the town, arrested and interrogated all people who the authorities
thought were acting suspiciously.
At the moment, the numbers of merchants coming from India
are reported to decrease considerably in Tamu.
The increase of Burmese soldiers positioned along the border
and the movements of troops could be related to the 15th anniversary
of 8888 uprising, according to local people in Tamu.
Our correspondent also reported that people in Monywa thought
it might be related to the bomb explosion in Monwa as it occurred
on the next day after the explosion.
