SPDC gives no sign to end Aung San
Suu Kyi’s detention
DvB ( July 4,2003 )
The foreign minister of Burma, U Win Aung has met his Thai
counterpart, Mr. Surakhiart today at Bangkok and discussed
the proposed road map plan for the restoration of democracy
in Burma.
DVB’s Aung Lwin Oo reports:
Aung Lwin Oo : The detention of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is to
prevent unstable situation from developing in Burma, said
the Burmese foreign minister U Win Aung who is at Bangkok
for a meeting today. Although he doesn’t know when the
Burmese democracy leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is going to
be released, the foreign minister of the Burmese military
junta also known as the SPDC [State Peace and Development
Council] insisted that the detention is aimed at preventing
riots in Burma.
Moreover, the minister said that the SPDC had no intention
or animosity against Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. That’s the
reason why the regime has been taking no action against her
and her party but to stabilise the situation in Burma. But
U Win Aung refused to answer the question on whether Daw Aung
San Suu Kyi is being detained with the hated Act 10A or not.
He also refused to say where Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is being
detained.
At the same time, he continued that there are many people
in Burma who are trying to make the country unstable and 12
people are being charged for that. Moreover, these people
are connected to Burmese activists and armed groups on the
Thai-Burma border, accused the minister. Therefore, the generals
are arresting people in Burma to prevent the country from
disintegrating and becoming unstable, insisted U Win Aung
in response to the international criticisms on the military
regime.
