Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is well says ICRC
DVB ( July 29,2003 )
The chief official of the ICRC in Rangoon told the DVB today
that the organisation was allowed to meet Daw Aung San Suu
Kyi who has been detained since the May 30 Dipeyin [Tabayin]
incident.
The meeting lasted about 30 minutes and she seemed to be
well, said Michel Ducreaux. ‘I have met Daw Aung San
Suu Kyi yesterday morning. She is in good health and in good
mood,’ he said but he refused to say where she is being
detained and he explained that he is not allowed to say due
to the ICRC’s policy.
Although the ICRC has been requesting the meeting with Daw
Aung San Suu Kyi since the occurrence of the Dipeyin incident,
the request was repeatedly turned down and it was only allowed
to meet her yesterday morning.
Mr. Decreaux also refused to answer why the ICRC was allowed
to meet her two months after the incident and said that the
news media people like us would know more about the condition.
The military government tended to allow family members of
political prisoners who were met by the ICRC. When asked if
Daw Aung San Suu kyi would be allowed to meet members of her
family, Mr. Decreaux said that the ICRC is requesting the
authority to let them meet her.
And when asked about the possibility of the release of Daw
Aung San Suu Kyi, Michel Decreaux said that he knows nothing
about it yet.
According to earlier reports, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi was detained
at the notorious Insein Prison and she was transferred to
Yemon military detention centre just before the ICRC was about
to inspect the prison. The only person who had met Daw Aung
San Suu Kyi before the ICRC was the UN’s special envoy
to Burma, Mr. Razali Ismail and he later confirmed that he
met her in Insein Prison.
The ICRC was allowed to visit some prisons in Mandalay and
Sagaing Divisions last month and met 30 people including the
NLD’s vice-chairman, U Tin Oo who were detained in connection
with Dipeyin incident.
Moreover, it managed to arrange meetings with their family
members. As for the second step, the ICRC has been allowed
to inspect Shwebo Prison on the coming Thursday.
It is not known who would be included in the team during
the coming trip, but two ICRC officials, one doctor and one
interpreter would be going, said Mr. Ducreaux. He also said
that the ICRC also received the reports of the recent releases
of prisoners from Shwebo Prison and the continuing arrests
of NLD members in Mandalay Division and ICRC will be trying
to visit the prisons where new prisoners are being detained.
