NDD denounces arrests of activists
DVb ( July 28,2003 )
Thailand-based Network for Democracy and Development (NDD)
strongly denounced the SPDC in a statement for the imprisonments
of four NLD members from Singu Township and the trials of
three Mandalay Division NLD members.
DVB’s Naw Nandar Chan reports:
Naw Nandar Chan : Although the SPDC has announced on the
18th of July that it has released 91 people in connection
with the Dipeyin incident, it has also been arresting the
NLD members throughout the country in connection with the
incident, said the statement. The NDD has released a statement
on the unfairness of the SPDC’s action and the network’s
chairman U Kyaw Kyaw told DVB the reason for releasing the
statement as follows:
U Kyaw Kyaw : Although the SPDC is saying that it has released
the people in connection with the Dipeyin incident, it is
clear that it continues to arrest the NLD members and the
local people who have been enthusiastically supporting Daw
Aung San Suu Kyi during her trips. The generals are saying
one thing on the one hand and on the other, they are continuing
the arrests of NLD members and their supporters. We need more
pressures from the international community. They need to pressurise
and force the SPDC to head towards democracy in Burma and
to immediately release all the people who matter including
Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and to talk to them by means of dialogue.
