Reaction on Burma ‘Road Map’
by the NCUB
DVB ( July 24,2003 )
It is reported that the National Council of the Union of
Burma (NCUB) has issued a statement on the Thai government’s
‘Road Map’ proposal. DVB’s Aung Lwin Oo
reports on the views of Burmese opposition groups included
in the statement:
Aung Lwin Oo : The statement says that the NCUB welcomes the
efforts of the UN and the international community to solve
the internal problems of Burma which have been becoming the
regional and world problems. At the same time, the NCUB also
wants to include the wishes of ethnic nationals and the people
of Burma in the ‘Road Map’ and the participations
of political parties’ representatives, insists the statement.
Ko Aung Moe Zaw, the general secretary of the NCUB told the
DVB the reasons:
Ko Moe Zaw Aung : The NCUB has been urging political interventions
from the international community through the UN Security Council...
As a result, the Thai government started to voice the idea
of the Road Map and discussed it at the ASEM yesterday. There
have been preparations and discussions on the Road Map. With
that situation when they are discussing and pushing the ideas
for solving the problems in Burma, we want the Thai government,
the international community and the opposition groups to base
their efforts on the opinions and wishes of the main political
forces inside Burma. Another thing is – we are told
that the Thai government is working hard with the SPDC and
the like. It is very difficult to guess how suitable are the
efforts of the Thai government for the social and political
realities inside Burma; it needs to base its efforts on the
views and wishes of the main political parties and the people
of Burma.
The Thai government’s Road Map proposal was given to
the SPDC’s Deputy Foreign Minister, U Khin Maung Win
at the beginning of this month when he visited Bangkok. The
Thai PM Mr. Thaksin also repeated today that the SPDC’s
Interior Minister U Tin Hlaing was also urged to study the
proposal. There has been no revelation of the details of the
Road Map to this day.
