NCUB welcomes ASEM’s decision
to discuss Burmese affairs
DVB ( July 23,2003 )
In a statement issued today, the National
Council of the Union of Burm [NCUB] has welcomed the decision
of Asia Europe Meeting [ASEM] held at Bali, Indonesia to discuss
Burmese affairs. The NCUB has also urged all the parties concerned
‘to endeavour and assist in carrying out in unity for
the recognition and implementation of the results of the 1990
general elections, and formation of the people’s parliament
as envisaged by the Burmese people’. DVB’s Khaing
Thazin reports:
Khaing Thazin : The statement says that the deteriorating
situation in Burma is ‘no more confined to the country
alone; rather the problems have spread and affected the regional
security’. Moreover, as the affairs of Burma are to
be discussed at the meeting, the NCUB requested the nations
involved to discuss deeds that could be done by the SPDC in
the effort to find out the truth about the May 30 Dipeyin
massacre. If the SPDC refused or failed to investigate the
incident, the security of the region could be seriously affected,
said the NCUB’s general secretary, Phado Mahn Sha as
follows:
Phado Mahn Sha : If enquiries could not be made into the
Dipeyin incident, more similar incidents could occur in the
future. If Burma’s political and economical situations
deteriorate further, more people would flee the country because
of the instability. There could be more instability in the
region. The Burmese problems could damage the regional security
further. Even with the present situation, the regional security
is quite affected.
Khaing Thazin : Moreover, the NCGUB also said that it is
right and proper to invite Mr. Razali Ismail, the UN’s
special envoy to Burma. Finally, the NCUB urged all the people
concerned to assist in the releases of NLD members including
U Tin Oo and Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, the re-opening of all NLD
offices and the substantiation of the results of 1990 general
elections and the convening of people’s parliament.
