in Moulmein
DVB (2003 July 15)
It is reported that a bomb exploded in front of the Moulmein
University Reserve Force near Infantry Battalion [IB] 104
on the 7th of July and a family member of a soldier was killed
by the blast. DVB’s Khaing Thazin reports:
Khaing Thazin : The bomb was said to have exploded near a
gas pipeline and the area is being cordoned off with bamboo
walls and no one is allowed to approach the area. A local
resident of Moulmein told the DVB about the explosion as follows:
A local resident of Moulmein : One person died. It occurred
on the 7th of July at about 8pm. The 104 Battalion is situated
on the south of the University Reserve Force. It occurred
at the other end of the University Road – to the direction
of Mudon…It was quite loud.
According to the news statement issued by the SPDC on the
11th of July, it is the work of an ‘unknown’ rebel
group and the person who planted the bomb also tried to blow
up the Moulmein Bridge and he was ‘found’ dead
with explosives. According to someone close to the army, the
army suffered badly by the explosion and tried to find the
culprit straight away. The explosion occurred on the anniversary
of the 7th July Student Revolution Day and it threatened both
the gas pipeline and the army, according to some observers.
