Interview with Dr. Thein Win, the MP of No.2, Kale Constituency, Sagaing Division

DVB ( July 08,2003 )

Dr. Thein Win : We are talking about the USDA [Kyant Phut]. The international accusation is true. It [Dipeyin assault] was systematically planned and executed. The answer is clearly there. On the other hand, I want our political activities to revive. We need to resume our walk on the path of dialogue set up by the UN as soon as possible.

DVB : What are you [MPs] planning for the return to the path of dialogue set up by the UN?

Dr. Thein Win : We and our supporters will be trying every means to go back on the path.

DVB : How are the people of Kale Township feeling about the detention of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi?

Dr. Thein Win : The people here have been feeling saddened since it happened. Some people even swooned when they heard the news. Some people are feeling aggrieved, angered and outraged by the brutality and cruelty... We have to comfort and calm them.

DVB : At the moment, the SPDC’s foreign minister and his deputy are touring ASEAN and Japan with photographs of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi telling them that she is OK.

Dr. Thein Win : The people here are saying that the generals are trying to lie to people with photographs in their hands. What lies are they going to tell? What are they trying to do? Is it true that she is well? Would she be still active? We are still living with anxiety for her.

DVB : What are your views on the ‘closures’ of the USDA offices?

Dr. Thein Win : People are very happy to hear about it. Some people say that they did that because of the international pressures. We can assume that they are starting to walk on the right path with this action. You could see it constructively. I see it that way. It should have been done long time ago. It has been more than 13 years since the election of 1990. They have been very tardy to act.

DVB : What do you have to say to your voters and NLD members?

Dr. Thein Win : We have to prepare ourselves mentally. We need to believe that we will definitely get democracy one day and work on with that spirit.
