July the 7th anniversary commemorated
DVB ( July 07,2003 )
The 41st anniversary of the Burmese students revolution which
falls on today is commemorated by exiled-Burmese organisations
such as the NCGUB, NCUB, ABSU, ABSDF, All Arakan Students
and Youths’ Congress, PPP, NLD [Liberated Areas] Youths
by issuing statements.
The main contents of the statements point out that the students
who were protesting peacefully for freedom of education were
brutally put down by the military junta with the help of weapons
and many university students were killed on the 7th of July,
1962.
Moreover, the historic Burmese students’ union building
was blown up with dynamites and the deed left an indelible
ugly stain on the Burmese history. In Burma, the students
have no rights to form a student union and those who tried
are labelled and severely punished as criminals.
On the 30th of May at the Dipeyin incident, many students
and youths were killed by the junta-sponsored thugs while
trying to save Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s life from the
assassination attempt. By looking at the incident, it is clear
that the military junta tried to eliminate all the chances
for national reconciliation and the emergence of democracy
in Burma.
Moreover, the statements demanded the junta to enquire into
the Dipeyin incident as soon as possible, to release all political
prisoners and to handover power to the NLD which won the election
in 1990.
