Security still
tight in Monywa
( DVB ) July 5, 2003
It is reported that one month after the Dipeyin incident,
security measures in Monywa in Upper Burma are still being
tightened by the army because of the rumours of the uprising.
The Buddhist monasteries where the monks live and public places
are said to be watched and guarded day and night.
After the incident, a military vehicle carrying a medium
anti-aircraft gun has been patrolling the streets of Monywa
to this day. On the night of the 30th of May, there was a
clash between democracy supporters, monks and the junta sponsored
thugs. As a result of the shooting, one student from Mnywa
GTI and a monk were killed. After the clash, there had been
anti-military activities for there consecutive days, according
to a local resident. The people of Monywa are still feeling
angered and outraged by the brutal and inhumane deeds of the
pro-regime thugs during the Dipeyin incident on the 30th of
May, said an unidentified resident.
The tension in Monywa is still palpable despite the fact
that it has elapsed into one month. Military trucks and soldiers
are still being positioned around the Buddhist monasteries,
playgrounds and the like. Moreover, each police station in
Monywa is given a military truck full-time. Telephone connections
to the town is also being cut off. |
