Interview with Thakhin Thein Pe
DVB (2003 June 17)

Thakhin Thein Pe talked to the DVB about the letter to General Than Shwe and gave his reactions as follows:
Thakhin Thein Pe : When I look at it, there is nothing. They are not going to do anything. We are giving advice to them. Even though we do that as you know, [giggles] not that we want to know, we are telling them to investigate the incident so that the loved ones of the dead and wounded would know the truth. Some of Thakhin said that it might be a mistake to have got the independence for Burma. We are facing it again. We are wondering if it was a mistake for us to have gained the independence.

DVB : Why is it a mistake?

Thakhin Thein Pe : We have never faced things like this before. It happened thus because this country doesn’t deserve the independence. What I want to say is – at the moment, Burmese [Burman] problems have become the world’s problem. So, Burma is becoming famous. But we became famous not like before when U Zaw Wate won gold medal. We became famous for another reason. [giggles]

DVB : Mr. Collin Powell and the like are criticising on what had happened in Burma. How far could these criticisms and pressures help to change Burma? What are your opinions? What are your worries?

Thakhin Thein Pe : We are still hearing hopeful words. When the deputy ministers talked to the minister from Japan, they promised that they will have the dialogues and negotiations and the like. There is still hope in a sense. But the people of Burma don’t believe that. What we think is – by now everyone would have learnt the lesson. It is time for Burmese [Burman] to unite – that’s my advice.

The authorities are often cutting of the telephone lines to Thakhin Thein Pe and famous politicians and the lines to the NLD and CRPP leaders are being cut off completely.
