Asia welcomes pressures from ASEAN
DVB (2003 June 17)
Forum Asia, the human rights organisation based in Thailand
welcomes the pressures of the ASEAN on the Burmese military
government, the SPDC by issuing a statement today at the association’s
foreign ministers meeting at Phnom Penn - demanding the release
of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi after the assaults on the NLD at Dipeyin
(Tabayin).
The statement of Forum Asia says that it welcomes the decision
of ASEAN foreign ministers which expresses their concerns
over the dire political and human rights situations inside
Burma. DVB’s Aung Lwin Oo reports:
Aung Lwin Oo : The statement of the ASEAN foreign ministers
is in line with the UN’s basic policies, and it could
help member countries to follow rules and maintain peace,
stability and progress for the region. Moreover, to make these
policies work, it is the inevitable duty of ASEAN, stressed
the statement of Forum Asia. The General Secretary of Forum
Asia told the DVB that his organisation welcomes the development.
But it still needs to be seen whether the ASEAN member governments
will fulfil the tasks or not in reality, he added. The ASEAN
also needs to guarantee that there will be processes and meetings
between Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and the SPDC leaders and national
reconciliation process. Therefore, the ASEAN needs to give
more pressures on Burma.
Moreover, in order to solve the problems of Burma peacefully,
all political prisoners including Daw Aung San Suu Kyi needed
to be released unconditionally and the ASEAN needs to urge
the SPDC to allow the NLD and democratic groups move freely
in Burma, added the statement of Forum Asia. |
