Clash between Wa and local militia
April 8, 2003

It is reported that there has been a clash between the Wa fighters who signed the ceasefire with the SPDC and some members of local militia and some militias were said to be killed in the clash. The clash occurred at Mong Htaw/Mong Hta area of Mongtung Township in Eastern Shan State.

Members of third Battalion in 171st Military Region attacked a heroine refinery of U Kyaloo, a local warlord. He built the refinery without the permission of the Wa and he has been making profits for many years.

The clash lasted 20 minutes and five militias and four villagers were killed and one Wa fighter was seriously wounded. Moreover, the remaining militias were arrested and the unprocessed opium resins were confiscated by the Wa fighters.

There have been constant disputes between the SPDC authorities, Wa fighters and militias over opium but it is the first time that the groups fought each other over the matter, according to news from China-Burma border.
