April 8, 2003

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and group held a public rally this morning in Kale, Sagaing Division. People from townships along Chindwin River came to meet them and the number of people in Kale is quite big, said U Lwin, the spokesman for the NLD.

At the rally at Kale, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi urged the people to be united and told women folks to get involved in democratic affairs. Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and group were welcomed by local NLD members and other organisations, said U Lwin as follows:

U Lwin : About 35,000 people, nearly 40,000 people from Kale welcomed them. Kale is quite a big town. Moreover, Tanhan Village is nearly a big town near Kale. Even though it is situated in Sagaing Division, many Chin nationals live there. Chin nationals welcomed her with traditional Chin dances. They welcomed them warmly. In Kale, apart from our members, there some members of Zomi National Congress [ZNC] and people from about 8 townships in Sagaing Division, especially along Chindwin River including Monywa waited for her so that they can see her.

U Lwin also said that the trip to Chin State is more successful than expected.

DVB’s Khin Maung Soe Minn files a report on the public rally in Kale with an interview with a local woman as follows:

Khin Maung Soe Minn : Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and group who achieved full success in Chin Hills and descended to the plains of central Burma were warmly welcomed by local Kale people with 15 cars and 30 mopeds at the foot of the hills. A local woman told the DVB about the event thus:

A local woman :‘The welcome was so heart-warming; they were welcomed by many people. Quite a number of people welcomed her in front of U Do Htaung's (NLD elected representative from Kale-1 constituency) home. But, she could not stop. She told the people to follow her to Kale because she had no time to stop there. She said she had not slept for three days and nights because of frequent car problems and that too many places still remain to be covered. So, we followed her.

Khin Maung Soe Minn :Daw Aung San Suu Kyi gave a public address for half an hour in front of the house of Dr. Thein Win, MP for Kale Township on Bogyoke Road. The local woman also told the DVB about her address as follows:

A local woman :‘She said that she is very glad to receive the love of the people. She also stated clearly her views on the government. If people preserve the acquired democracy, it will become a successful democracy. Or else, it would have no essence if the next generation doesn’t look after it and the like. She won’t be able to do any work if she doesn’t have the support of the people. She asked people if they are afraid. Say the truth, she said. Yes. They all answered. She is very pleased with their honesty. You won’t get anywhere if you are afraid. You need to be free from that fear and everyone has the duty to improve the nation. We are going in front and people are not following, how could we succeed? We can’t succeed and the like.

Although there are no harassments from the authorities and the USDA, members of No. 17 Intelligence Regiment videotaped people in attendance from the top of a fire engine parked nearby. They also took the list of the names of youth who were in charge of the safety of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. There are many military regiments in Kale and the families of soldiers were told to buy food for two days and ordered to stay indoor while she was there. At Tunzan, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and group were welcomed by traditional Chin dances.

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and group have departed for Kyaukhtut Township and they are expected to be there this evening. Tomorrow, they are expected to open a NLD township office in Matupi in southern Chin State.
