New
York based Free Burma Coalition (FBC) has demanded the British
authorities not to handover one of the protesters who took refuge
inside the British embassy in Rangoon after staging a protest
in front of the embassy on Friday. The
demand was directly sent in a letter to the British PM, Tony
Blair at No.10, Downing Street and the life of a Burmese democratic
activist depends on the decision of the British government,
says the letter.
The military government has been systematically
and continually cracking down on democratic activists in Burma
since it took over power in 1988. Many people have lost their
lives for their political beliefs and thousands are being
toured in prisons. As the British government supports democracy
and human rights, FBC believes that it would not hand over
people who peacefully and innocently demonstrate to the brutal
military junta.
The government of Britain has the responsibility
to protect democratic activists as a signatory to the UN human
rights agreements and it would seriously consider the demand,
says the statement. According to the latest news from Rangoon,
the British embassy in Rangoon hasn’t said anything
about the matter to any news agency yet. |
