April 7, 2003

It is reported that Daw Aung San Suu Kyi reached at Falam, Chin State after midnight last night. The local people around the town came to greet her at Falam until the midnight. U Lwin, told the DVB about the situation in Falam as follows:

U Lwin : There were about 8,000 people waiting for her until midnight. But they have been waiting for her for two days and they went home. So, she met only 2,500 people at 2.30 in the morning. As soon as she saw them she thanked them. She said that she is very much encouraged by people’s desire for the struggle for democracy. She talked to them for two hours and left Falam at 4.30am. She met local leaders and left for Tunzan in the evening. We don’t know how long she will be in Tunzan and when she will leave.

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi also gave public addresses to the people at Tiddim and Falam. DVB’s Khin Maung Soe Minn:

Khin Maung Soe Minn : Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and group arrived at Tiddim at 11am today and the local people welcomed them heartily (warmly) and she handed out sweets and snacks to children. A public meeting held at 2pm in front of a NLD member’s house was attended by more than 10,000 people, according to a local man. At about three Pm today, they left Tiddim for Tunzan. Before she reached Tiddim, She stopped at Falam and she was welcomed by about 3000 enthusiastic supporters at 2am. Even though there are no harassments from the authorities in Haka, there are many restrictions in Htantalan. A jeep car ridden by the chairman and vice-chairman of Htantalan Township NLD is still being detained at a police station after it was forced to turn back from Haka after reaching there. A decorated welcoming gate at the entrance of the town was forced to be torn down by the local authorities on the 5th. When a township office was open at a NLD member’s home yesterday, there were so many attendants that some had to go into a nearby football pitch to see the ceremony but they were driven out by the police. Moreover, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi who was wearing a Chin national dress was allowed to be welcomed with traditional Chin music only as singing and dancing were banned by the authorities.

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and group will leave Tunzan and rest at Kale in Sagaing Division. And tomorrow, they will leave Kale for Gangaw and from there they will go to Matupi in southern Chin State to open the township office there. According to U Lwin, there are four township offices and one state office to be opened in this trip and only the one at Matupi remains to be opened. Moreover, township offices at Saw and Chauk in Magwe Division are to be opened.
