High Priced burial for the loved one

Sittwe, December 30: Since the Sittwe (Akyab) City Municipal authority is asking for more money for burials, poor families are facing financial difficulties to farewell their deceased loved one, said a Sittwe resident.

The official price list of Arr Kyeat Taw Koung Cemetery in Sittwe says normal burial 150 kyat, cremation 200 kyat, and brickwork 500 kyat.

However, in realities it costs ten times more than the listed prices, i.e., 1,500 kyat for normal burial, 2,000 for cremation, and 5,000 for brickwork.

The municipal workers claim that since they cannot survive with the official salary, they have to find extra money for themselves.

Since some poor families could not afford to pay to bury their departed relatives, they had to leave the bodies without any burial, he added.
