Subject - Urgent Action for Democracy in
Burma.
Fifteen years of military rule which extinguished democracy through
derision of the people’s will has resulted in deprivation
of human rights, illegal arrests, imprisonments, and unjust activities
in violation of existing laws culminating in the 30th May 2003 Tabayin
episode which never ever should have occurred.
Because of all this, the National League for Democracy (NLD) organizing
committee members from the townships in Irrawaddy Division, other
NLD members and citizens of the country have signed this petition
and request that the United Nations Security Council seriously consider
and urgently take action to remedy the
situation and obtain
(a) The immediate and unconditional release of NLD leader, Daw Aung
San Suu Kyi and all political prisoners.
(b) The immediate reopening of all NLD offices that have been forcibly
sealed and freedom to participate in political activities for all
political parties.
(c) The implementation of unanimous UNGA resolutions declaring
that the desire for democracy by the people has been reflected in
the results of the 1990 elections.
(d) An independent enquiry commission to investigate the “Tabayin
massacre”.
