Background on Burma
The people of Burma, ruled by one of the world's most brutal dictatorships,
are locked in a struggle for freedom and democracy, as well as their
lives. Since 1988 the Burmese have led a concerted effort to bring
about an end to dictatorship in Burma. The leader of the struggle,
1991 Nobel Peace Prize winner Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, was detained
after the bloody May 30 attack by regime paramilitaries on her motorcade.
Scores of democracy supporters were murdered, many more arrested
and all NLD members remain in danger.
There has never been a more important time to work for democracy
in Burma. The US sanctions are an important step in building pressure
against the military junta. Inside the country democracy activists
are being clamped down upon as never before. The call from Aung
San Suu Kyi is simple and clear: "please, use your liberty
to promote ours."
Congressman Joseph Crowley is a Democratic member of the U.S. House
of
Representatives and a member of the International Relations Committee
that oversees U.S. relations with Burma. To learn more about him,
