Urgent
Call for International Action Against Latest Acts of Repression
by the Burmese Military Regime
Women's League of Burma
The Women's League of Burma is outraged at the violence instigated
by Burma's military regime, the State Peace and Development Council
(SPDC), against Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and members of her democratically
elected party, the National League for Democracy (NLD), during their
peaceful organising trip in Upper Burma. At least four people were
killed and 50 people injured in a confrontation provoked by the
junta near Monywa on the night of May 30, 2003. Some reports say
more than 200 NLD members have been arrested.
We are gravely concerned at the fate of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and
other NLD leaders who are now being detained by the regime. The
SPDC has shut NLD offices, and has ordered all colleges and universities
in Burma to close.
The regime must not be allowed to get away with these brazen acts
of repression. We urge supporters of Burma's democracy movement
and in particular our sister activists worldwide to take immediate
action at this critical time.
We urge you to:
stage protests outside Burmese Embassies in your country
demand that your governments
immediately issue strong protests to Burma's military
regime
take immediate action, including the suspension of all forms of
aid and investment to Burma, to pressure the regime to release Daw
Aung San Suu Kyi, lift all restrictions on her party, and begin
talks that will lead to a process of national reconciliation in
Burma.
