| Working Group to Support
Sanctions on Burma (WGSSB)
Announcement 01/2003 August 15, 2003
Washington, DC
In response to Depayin Massacre on May, 30, 2003 and continued
human rights abuses by the Burmese military junta, the United States
Congress and Administration take effective measures to sanction
the ruling Burmese military junta, to strengthen Burma's democratic
forces and support and recognize the National League of Democracy
as the legitimate representative of the Burmese people. However,
the military thugs are trying to find ways to avoid or violate these
measures as usual. As suggested by some Burmese democratic community
leaders, we take responsibilities to find out these violations to
have maximum impact of US Sanctions against Burma's regime. Therefore,
we establish a small group, called "Working
Group to Support Sanctions on Burma (WGSSB)". This is
not a political organization nor political party. We commit ourselves
voluntarily our time, energy, and effort, without seeking any financial
assistance, aiming to attack Burma's military junta and assist the
democracy movement led by Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.
Mission/ Objective:
To maintain and further strengthen the US Sanctions against Burma's
military regime as part of the process of regime change.
Functions:
We can describe our functions with three words: educating, informing,
and investigating.
The following functions would be carried out with the help of the
Burmese democratic community members in the US. We will:
1. Translate the US President Bush's executive order 13310, enacted
on July 28, 2003, based on the "Burmese Freedom and Democracy
Act of 2003", which was approved overwhelmingly in US Senate
and House of Representatives, into Burmese language and inform the
Burmese democratic community members in the US.
2. Get the definition and meanings of the measures that included
in the executive order and inform the Burmese democratic community
members in the US.
3. Compile the list of the people who are not allowed entering
the US in accordance with the executive order and submit to the
US administration and the members of the Burmese democratic community
in the US.
4. Investigate the immediate family members of the SPDC and the
USDA, who are in the US by violating the current visa restrictions,
with the help of Burmese democratic community and inform the US
administration to take actions.
5. Investigate the money transaction from the US to Burma, which
is illegal under the executive order, and inform the US administration
to take actions.
Request:
We are the members of the Burmese democratic community in the US
and our intended job would be part of the actions of the Burmese
democratic community supporting the democracy movement inside Burma.
We welcome suggestions, participation and information, which would
be crucial for the success of our functions.
